Spring into spring with Prague's international music festival

This spring the Czech Republic will play host to the 62nd Prague Spring International Music Festival - an event that incorporates the best of Czech music, along with a range of international performers.

Beginning on May 12th with the traditional opening night performance of Bedrich Smetana's My Country by the Czech Philharmonic, over the next 28 days the festival will go on to see another 45 concerts, seven competitive concerts and nine theatrical performances take place at 17 alternative venues around the capital.

Some of the visiting performers at this year's event include Sakari Oramo and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Rudolfinum Jazz Orchestra, which according to the organiser's was originally founded in 1988 by Wynton Marsalis - an 'amphibious musician' as part of the New York Philharmonic.

The festival will also see its 59th annual music competition, which this year will be open to conductors and hornists.

For those visiting city, the Prague experience website states that although the Czech Crown is the national currency, the euro is accepted in a number of hotels and shops. It also adds that tourist information offices can be found in both the old town and at the main train station.
