Prague Autumn International Music Festival

26th June 2007

Prague, that most musical of cities, draws the curtain on a symphonic summer and ushers in the arias of autumn with the Prague Autumn International Music Festival, from September 12th to October 1st.

This prestigious classical event has become a truly international event, while never losing sight of Czech and Slovak music. Since its beginnings in the early 90s, the festival has fostered relationships with the BBC and Czech radio orchestras, as well as orchestras and choirs from Russia and Germany.

As the festival has grown it has cast its net further to feature musicians performing compositions from outside of the classical canon. For example, the programme has brought the Xalapa Guitar Orchestra of Mexico to Prague, as well as Chinese operas and balalaika music from Moscow.

That said, music from the Czech and Slovak regions remains the central theme, with orchestras from around the globe gathering to perform compositions from some of the region's most celebrated composers. This year, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales will be performing Dvorák's Scherzo Capriccioso on September 21st.

All of the concerts take place at the Rudolfinum Concert Hall, located in Prague's Old Town. This grand setting is steeped in history, having been used as the state parliament building between wars.

Embrace the autumn with a city break in musical Prague.
