Visit Porto, the city of bridges
15th October 2008
Porto, situated in the north of Portugal, offers visitors a wealth of experiences, from its port wine cellars to its architecture.
With its historic centre named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, the city promises to spoil those who come here with its rich variety of monuments, from its cathedral - the oldest surviving structure - to the neo-classical Palacio da Bolsa (or stock exchange palace).
It is also known as the city of bridges, with six intact structures currently in operation across the river Douro which runs through the city.
These include the concrete arch bridge Ponte de Arrabida, previously the largest in the world when it was erected in 1963, and the Ponte Dona Maria Pia, constructed by Gustave Eiffel in 1877.
Visitors should not miss out on a proper tasting of the city's port, the famous Douro region's dessert wine.
The Association of Port Wine Companies says it is one of the country's symbols, and that wine cellars, including the plethora to be found in Vila Nova de Gaia across the river, are the best place to sample varieties and learn more about the drink's history.
Companies running wine cellars include Calem Porto, Offley Forrester and Taylor's.
Together with a range of museums, churches and markets, Porto indeed offers a richness of culture and plenty to keep people busy during their time here.
So go ahead, head to Porto for an unforgettable break
