Perpignan – the Centre of the Universe
10th January 2007
Found in the south of France near the Spanish border, Perpignan is a unique city that combines aspects of French, Mediterranean and Catalan heritages.
The city is built around a large citadel containing the Majorcan Kings Palace, a 13th century castle that was redeveloped in the 17th century by the famous military engineer Vauban.
Perpignan has seen many conflicts due to its status as a border city. The Romans, Hannibal and Napoleon have all invaded or fought within the city walls.
The city's uncertain status throughout history has left it with an individual design that is unlike any other. The layout was described by famous photographer Pierre Boulat as "fossil alleys edged with styled houses".
In 1963 Surrealist Salvador Dali famously declared that Perpignan's railway station was the centre of the Universe and said it was his greatest inspiration. Dali's later painting The Topological Abduction of Europe also made this point. The station now hosts a monument to the artist as well as a large sign repeating his declaration.
Perpignan's Mediterranean climate means numerous vineyards and gardens can be found in the city. The digue d'Orry exotic garden contains over 280 species of wildlife and plants, while the Sant Vicens Garden was once popular with artists such as Picasso and today hosts an art gallery, a wine store and an antiques room. An inspiration and source of contemplation for famous artists, visitors to Perpignan are sure to find the city just as fascinating.
