Parma - an architectural delight

1st November 2007

The Italian city of Parma, which is located in the Emilia-Romagne region of the Mediterranean country, is famed for its beautiful architecture.

Full to the brim with churches and palaces, Parma offers visitors the chance to sample a taste of Italy's past.

Some of the main attractions include the 11th-century Benedictine Monastery of San Paolo and the Romanesque Cathedral, home to a 12th-century sculpture by Benedetto Antelami and a 16th-century fresco masterpiece by Antonio da Correggio.

In addition to these historical sites, visitors to Parma can check out the Gothic church of San Francesco del Prato, which until recently was the home of the city's prisoners.

Parma truly is a walk back in time, with glorious architecture placed around every corner.

However, the city is not solely stuck in the past. It is also the home of many a gastronomic delight.

Hams, cheeses, wines, cakes and liqueurs are all made in Parma - and visitors should make sure that they sample this local produce.

There are also plenty of activities to keep culture vultures happy, including the Oratorio di Santa Maria delle Grazie, the National Gallery, the Magnani-Rocca Foundation and the Museo Lombardi - all of which give an insight into the artistic history of Italy.

Head to Parma for history, food and culture.
