Swimming on the Seine in Paris

Temperatures in Paris often soar during the summer months and as such many people can be tempted to take a dip in the Seine. But from July 6th onwards visitors to Paris can cool off with a rather different swimming experience.

A new swimming pool has been constructed on the Seine, to give swimmers the sensation of swimming in the river without the danger of passing boats and with much cleaner water! Complimenting the beach which is created every summer along part of the Pompidou Expressway on the banks of the Seine, the floating Piscine Josephine Baker has all the conveniences of a modern sports complex, including a cafe, gym and a large decking area for those who want to take a break from the pool.

Situated close to the Francois-Mitterrand Library, the pool has a glass roof to give visitors the feeling of being outside, but without the noise and pollution that goes with bathing in a working river. The pool is even environmentally-friendly, as water is taken from the Seine itself and recycled to fill the pool, which is split into two separate areas.

It is hoped that the attraction will prove popular with visitors to the nearby beach, who often find that the waters of the Seine itself are not as inviting as that of the sea, due to the large amount of traffic which goes back and forth along the river.

The Josephine Baker complex is not, however, the first floating pool in Paris. In 1805 the Piscine Deligny was established and was popular for many years before it eventually sank in 1995 after falling into disrepair.

The pool can offer the ideal relaxation for visitors enjoying a short break to Paris, taking time out from the hectic city lifestyle.
