Science and Industry Museum in Paris
30th January 2007
Paris' Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie is the biggest science museum in Europe and is visited by over three million people every year.
The building is found in the Parc de la Villette and was designed by Peter Rice, the famous architect who also worked on designs for the Louvre Pyramid, the Pompidou Centre and the Sydney Opera House.
The Cité has been open since 1986, and holds a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Interactive exhibits and demonstrations are a feature of the Explora collection, which explores the human body, photographical technology and aviation simulators.
The Explora exhibitions are also the main site of temporary collections, with current displays including an investigation into alien life-forms that runs until July 22nd.
A distinctive part of the museum is the Argonaute submarine, a decommissioned vessel that travelled around the world as part of the French navy in the 1950s. The 400 ton craft can now be examined at close quarters.
More modern transportation devices include a model of the Ariane space launcher, which allows visitors to experience true weightlessness.
Presentations and film screenings are held in the Geode, a huge stainless steel sphere that projects films onto its inner ceiling. The innovative Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie is the ideal location for visitors wanting to enjoy some fascinating technological experiences.
