Plans for Paris Gehry museum announced
9th October 2006
Architect Frank Gehry, the man behind the Guggenheim in Bilbao, has unveiled plans for a new museum of art to be built in Paris.
Already known for his unusual designs, Gehry has gone a step further with his latest conception. The proposed Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation will cost £70 million, with an elaborate glass panel design that recalls other Parisian landmarks such as the Louvre Pyramid.
The project is the brainchild of France's richest man, Bernard Arnault, who compared the design to a giant cloud. Covering 4,200 square metres, the building will also offer rooftop terraces to provide views of the surrounding area.
Housing works by Picasso, Rothko, Bacon and others, the museum is set to further enhance Paris' already formidable cultural reputation, with Gehry himself calling it "my favourite city".
To be built in the Jardin d'Acclimatation in Paris' vast Bois de Boulogne park, the structure has already aroused a great deal of public interest. Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delaroe hailed it as "an enormous present for Paris, and for France's image in the world".
The new museum is sure to offer a splendid attraction for visitors on a short break when it opens in late 2009.
