Monet's Water Lilies lit up in Paris

5th May 2006

The renowned Orangerie Museum in Paris will finally reopen to the public on May 17th following a six-year and £21 million redesign, providing a paradise for lovers of impressionist art.

Located in the Tuileries Gardens in central Paris, the renovation honours the impressionists' love of light by introducing a huge skylight and providing the building with the feeling of a greenhouse, which was its original use.

The highlight of the collection is a room dedicated to Monet's Les Nympheas, his giant water lily paintings which are among the most famous works of art in the world.

They are now hung as Monet intended, with a glass roof enabling natural light to illuminate the paintings and a system of overhead spotlights to give the same effect on cloudy days.

"This installation is unique, it is the Sistine chapel of impressionism," commented Philppe Saunier, the museum's curator.

In addition to Monet's magnificent pieces, the museum will also display works by Renoir, Cezanne and Picasso, including Renoir's celebrated Le Clown painting.

Any visitors to Paris are highly recommended to visit the renovated museum, to view some of the most fabulous works of art in the world.
