International Circus Festival of Tomorrow in Paris
30th October 2006
Paris will be the scene for a coming together of the world's acrobatic high flyers when it holds the Circus Festival of Tomorrow from January 1st to January 31st. A variety of different competitions across a range of age groups are certain to ensure that there's never a dull moment.
The venue for the event is the Cirque d'Hiver, which has hosted such entertainment spectaculars for over 150 years. With its oval design highly reminiscent of Rome's Colosseum, the building brings a suitably dramatic edge to proceedings.
Inside the domed structure, competition promises to be light hearted but fierce, as stars from circuses across the globe converge to prove their abilities in front of an audience of several thousand. Beijing Circus, Moscow Circus and Switzerland's Knie Circus are just some of the troupes involved.
But the festival does not just focus on the current generation's leading lights, with three separate competitions open to performers aged 12 to 25 years old. The history of circus performance is also recognised, with Paris this year paying tribute to the ancient acrobatic circus of China via a series of reconstructions and imitative routines.
The month ends with the presentation of the annual awards to those adjudged to be the finest practitioners of their art. Named after the famous circus clowns, the Annie Fratellini and Yuri Nikulin awards provide a suitable bridge between the famous past and the promising future of what is always an awe-inspiring event.
