Visit Osnabruck
27th June 2008
The city of Osnabruck lies between the Wiehengebirge mountain range and the uppermost tip of the Teutoburg Forest.
It is the cultural centre of the western part of Lower Saxony and a major hub of economic activity in the region.
Among the top tourists attractions in the city are the town hall where the Peace of Westphalia was signed, the 11th century St Peter's Cathedral and the Heger Tor, a monument to the soldiers from Osnabruck that lost their lives in the battle of Waterloo.
For art lovers, the Felix Nussbaum Haus houses a gallery and museum dedicated to the Jewish artist and painter Felix Nussbaum who was a victim of the Holocaust.
Other historical sights of interest include the Buckstum, the oldest tower in the city which was once used to imprison women accused of being witches.
In addition to a variety of museums, theatres and cinemas, Osnabruck welcomes the biannual Jahrmarkt in Spring and Autumn, one of northern Germany's biggest musical events. Other seasonal events include the Osnabruck Christmas Market and the Eat Well in Osnabruck festival.
