Nimes– The city of many stages

28th June 2006

Over 2,000 years old, Nimes has been continually shaped and reshaped by the people who have lived here and today the city is a combination of the ancient, the more modern and the brand new.

One of the most popular attractions in the city is its Roman amphitheatre. It is one of the few amphitheatres in the world which is still in a relatively good condition and it is believed to have been built between the first and second centuries. It is still used today for various sports – including as a bullfighting ring.

The Roman walls and the Maison Caree temple are other examples of structures built by the Romans and the temple is particularly impressive, being the only temple of this time to have survived to the modern day.

Of the more modern attractions in Nimes, the Jardins de la Fontaine is a wonderful example. These beautifully constructed public gardens were built during the 18th century and they remain a popular destination for tourists and locals alike looking to get away from the busy city centre and relax in calming surroundings.

Contrasting with this wealth of historical architecture, Nimes also has more contemporary structure, including the translucent steel and glass Carré d'Art museum near the Maison Caree, which is described as forming an 'echo' to the Roman structure. Even the bus shelter is ultra-modern, representing the crocodile and palm tree which form the arms of Nimes.

Nimes therefore has something for everyone enjoying a short break to the city, with attractions ranging from the modern to the ancient.
