Art in the City in Nice

Visitors to Nice are now able to combine travel around the city centre with a viewing of 14 works of modern art.
The project, entitled l'Art dans la Vie or Art in the City, has seen a selection of works by French and international artists exhibited at points along the city's tramline.
In 2004, the decision was proposed by Nice's culture and tourism department to use the tramline - itself a progressive approach to urban transport - as the backbone for an exciting artistic vision.
The result was the drawing up of a shortlist of 218 works, from which only 14 were chosen to enhance the city landscape this year.
Among the major examples are the statues of Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, which glow like beacons in Place Massena, and the Italian Maurizio Nannucci's neon messages - written in various European languages - that can be read in Square Toja.
Dublin-born artist Michael Craig Martin also features in the Art in the City project. His contribution consists of images of everyday objects 'cascading' down the facades of four buildings along Virgil Boulevard Barel.
