Energetic Naples with much to offer
17th May 2006
Naples is a historic and vibrant city with a welcoming atmosphere and a wealth of fantastic attractions to keep visitors very busy.
The Italian city is full of beautiful architecture and fabulous monuments, with the Duomo one of the highlights. The grand Gothic cathedral dates back to the 13th century and contains an elaborately decorated ceiling and beautiful alter.
Chiesa di San Domenico Maggiore is another favourite, with the Gothic church housing wonderful Renaissance sculptures and containing wooden shutters carved with images of saints.
The Museo Archeolgico Nazionale is one of the finest archaeological museums in Europe and is not to be missed. It includes items found in Pompeii and Herculaneum, in addition to many fantastic sculptures and paintings.
Art lovers are urged to head to the Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte, where an outstanding collection of Renaissance paintings are held. Masterpieces by renowned artists such as Botticelli, Caravaggio and Michelangelo can all be viewed.
Visitors who fancy shopping in a magnificent location will find no better place than the Galleria Umberto I. The imposing building has a hugely impressive iron and glass roof and is an excellent place to browse some shops or sit in a cafe with an Italian coffee.
With plenty of excellent restaurants and bars in the city in addition to the plethora of attractions, Naples makes a top choice for a city break.
