Archaeological Museum of Naples

3rd January 2007

The National Museum of Archaeology in Naples has stood for almost 400 years and holds one of the finest collections of cultural remnants from the ancient world.

Set up in 1615 as the site of the University of Naples, by the start of the 19th century the building had been transformed into a museum of international importance.

Greek and Roman antiquities are the central focus of the museum's collection. The famous Farnese Collection includes a variety of gemstones and fine jewellery, and also features the Farnese Marbles - a group of classical sculptures recently brought together for the first time. Animals, Roman emperors and Hercules are all featured in the collection.

The nearby ruins of Pompeii provide a number of other exhibits. A collection of Mosaics focusing on Alexander the Great and famous Pompeii residents date back to 79 AD. Silverware and ivory objects provide an insight into ancient arts and crafts.

Further collections extend to Egyptian and Renaissance artefacts, and more recent constructions are also on show - an intricate model of Pompeii made in the mid 19th century provides an insight into the structure of the city.

With coin collections, bronze statues and ancient paintings also on display, the museum offers an unrivalled insight into ancient cultures and is a must-see for visitors enjoying a break in Naples.
