Munich's Nymphenburg Palace

10th November 2006

Set within over 200 acres of parkland, the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich is an extraordinary example of the type of baroque palace that was once home to Europe's ruling classes, and as a result has become one of the most visited attractions in the city.

Originally commissioned in 1664 by the then elector of Bavaria, Ferdinand Maria, the palace was soon developed into one of the most famous sights in Munich.

A series of pavilions, arched windows and sculptures make the residence an awe-inspiring sight from the outside and the palace interiors are no less fascinating. Notable points of interest including the Steinerne Saal, a stone hall that features elaborate ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The hall is so extensive that it covers three floors of the palace's central pavilion.

With the baroque designs of the 17th century still found in the decorations of almost every room, each new building proves to be a striking illustration of the extravagant style. One such section is the Schoenheitsgallerie, literally meaning gallery of beauties, which was specially commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria to pay tribute to some of his favourite subjects.

The gallery features portraits of 36 beautiful women of the period, and includes a portrait of the dancer Lola Montez, with whom the King was to have an affair – an indiscretion which eventually led to the German revolutions of 1848.

With a whole host of other buildings, stables and pavilions to discover, as well as the baroque gardens of the park itself, the palace is sure to provide visitors with both an unforgettable architectural treat and a look into the lives of the rich and famous of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
