Happy birthday Munich
8th April 2008
One of Europe's youngest yet most progressive cities - Munich - reaches a special landmark in 2008. From April 17th to September 13th, the city will be "Building Bridges" between its history and its bright future.
At just 850 years old, Munich is a relative newcomer, but has nonetheless become an advanced and highly cultural place to live and visit. There are now more than a million people living in what began as the most modest of towns.
To celebrate this anniversary, the Bavarians will be holding a number of events through the summer, such as exhibitions, concerts and markets, with a range of associations and individuals getting involved.
However, three main activities stand out on the calendar. The first of these will be the City Foundation Festival, the annual citizen's event which will this year be bigger and better than ever before.
Then, from July 19th to 20th, the Old Town Ring Road Festival will bring musical and theatrical performance to the charming old quarter, before the Isar Bridge Festival takes place along the waterfront.
With the party in full flow, it is a sure bet that the people in Munich will enjoy a drink or two. The famous Paulaner beer is brewed in the city, making for an interesting and intoxicating visit.
Celebrate Munich's birthday.
