Much to do in lively Montpellier
28th April 2006
Montpellier is a vibrant city bursting with history and has plenty of attractions on offer to suit all tastes and ages.
The old city centre is a fantastic place to stroll round, with historic architecture, a diverse range of shops, excellent restaurants, hidden courtyards and lovely churches.
Many residents of Montpellier consider the church of Saint Anne as the city's symbol and the towering steeple would be hard to miss. The church contains an art gallery featuring modern pieces from local and international artists.
Visitors are recommended to take a trip to the two out of the 25 tours which still remain. The towers once reinforced medieval walls and gateways which protected the city.
A bustling market is held each morning on the Plade de la Comédie, with a wide range of goods on sale, and is well worth a visit.
For a relaxing day in the French city, the Jardin des Plantes offers the perfect location. France's oldest botanical garden contains a vast array of plants, tropical greenhouses and a rock garden.
Just south of the city is La Grande Motte beach resort, where water sports and nature hikes are available, or visitors can simply laze in the sunshine!
Montpellier is a gorgeous, welcoming city which is perfect for either a relaxing city break or a busy sightseeing long weekend.
