Monaco - Playground of the rich and famous
5th June 2006
The principality of Monaco is renowned for its links with the world's rich and famous.
Sculpted by the high mountains on one side and the silver sea on the other, Monaco is a place of great natural beauty and this has been complemented over the years through some impressive buildings.
Some of the wealthiest people in the world either live or own summer retreats in this beautiful region. The city is a favourite with Formula One drivers, not only during the famous annual race through the city's streets.
Famed for its casinos and yachts, the city may be a playground for the rich and famous but it can also offer plenty of attractions for those with less money.
One of the most memorable structures is, unsurprisingly, the Prince's Palace, which has been standing since the 12th century and houses some beautiful frescoes and opulently decorated rooms, such as the Throne Room.
Another building that has been revered around the world, although much more modern than the Prince's Palace, is the Stade Louis II football stadium in the city. Home to Monaco's football club, this arena has attracted some of the world's top sporting events and is a must-see for sports fans.
But one of Monaco's greatest attractions is a prehistoric cave 200 feet below the city's exotic gardens. Known as the Observatory Caves, the natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites have been illuminated to give visitors a fantastic view.
