Medieval Magdeburg

26th June 2008

The city of Magdeburg played a central role in the history of medieval Germany.

It was home to the first Holy Roman Emperor, Otto I, who was buried in the city's cathedral after his death. The cathedral is undoubtedly the architectural centrepiece of Magdeburg.

Standing 104 metres high, the building contains a number of beautiful sculptures, such as the Twelve Virgins which stand at its northern gate.

Martin Luther also preached in the city which he turned in a protestant stronghold.

Prominent attractions in the city include the church of Our Beloved Lady, now a museum of modern art, The Magdebuger Reiter, the first equestrian sculpture north of the Alps and The Green Citadel of Magdeburg, a large pink building which was completed in 2005.

Visitors can also take a stroll along the Magdeburg Water Bridge, the longest example of such a structure in Europe, and explore the ruins of the Kingdom of Prussia's most formidable strongholds.

Keen cyclists will be glad to learn that Magdeburg is the one of the major towns situated on the Elbe Cycle Route.

Magdeburg is home to an array of cafes, theatres, museums, galleries and comedy venues.
