The Prado in Madrid
4th January 2007
Madrid's Museo del Prado is one of the finest and most famous museums in the world and holds 8,000 paintings and over 10,000 other works of art.
Found in the city centre, the Villanueva building that houses most of the museum was constructed during the reign of Charles III in 1785. The site was damaged when used as a headquarters by Napoleonic troops in the early 19th century but rebuilt under the order of Ferdinand VII.
Some of the most famous paintings in Spanish history are found within the Villanueva, including Las Meninas by Velazquez and The Adoration of the Shepherds by El Greco.
The museum's unrivalled collection of Spanish art features almost 150 works by Goya, including The Third of May 1808, painted to express the artist's anger at events during Spain's War of Independence. The series of Black Paintings demonstrate the dark moods of the painter's final years.
The Prado's collection of works by Hieronymous Bosch includes the Garden of Earthly Delights, rated as one of the world's finest paintings.
Temporary exhibitions within the museum aim to provide fresh looks at the art world. Current displays include a history of drawing by Hispanic artists, with work by Jose de Ribera and Alonso Cano on show. Presenting an unparalleled history of Spanish and European artwork, the Prado Museum is a must for visitors on a relaxing break in Madrid.
