Make a trip to Madrid

17th March 2006

Madrid is a very lively city, with youthful residents enjoying the traditional cafes, flea market and the vibrant and diverse nightlife on offer. It is also a place for art lovers, while the buzzing neighbourhoods and plazas ensure a buoyant atmosphere all-year round.

The Prado museum is one of the most important and well-loved museums in the world, with a massive collection of works, including pieces by Goya, Ribera, Boticelli and Velazquez. The huge museum also contains classical Greek and Roman sculpture and the building itself is to be admired.

For modern art, visitors should head to the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, which includes work by Dali, Bacon, Kandinsky and perhaps most popular of all, Picasso's Guernica.

Another highlight is the Palacio Real, a former royal residence, with around 50 rooms open to visitors, including the magnificent Throne Room. Numerous sculptures, tapestries, gold and silverware and porcelain are showcased in the fabulous building.

For a relaxing escape from the bustle of the art galleries and other attractions, the Parque del Buen Retiro has a beautiful rose garden, boats for hire on the lake and puppet shows in the summer.

Madrid is very easy to navigate by foot, with most attractions located in a small area, while there are a whole host of quality cafes, restaurants and bars which make great places to watch the world go by.
