Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Visitors to Madrid's Prado and Reina Sofia galleries doubtless leave the exhibitions overawed, but with the strange sense of something missing – vast displays of artwork that nonetheless lack work from either the Italian primitive or early 20th century eras. The chances are that such pieces will be found in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, thought to be the most impressive collection of art after the British Royal Family's collection.
Completing the so called Golden Triangle of Art which also features the Prado and Reina Sofia, the museum's permanent collection houses a vast range of work which features the English, Dutch and German schools from the 16th century, while also focusing on the more modern impressionists, expressionists and 20th century artists.
Initially a private collection started by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1920, the Baron eventually sold his artwork to the Spanish government in 1993, the museum having been opened a year earlier. The news came as a disappointment to the German and Swiss governments, who had hoped that the Baron would give the collection to either his homeland or his then country of residence.
The museum itself is divided into individual artistic movements, with a floor set aside for each of the major styles or groups. Hence visitors can move from Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque exhibitions through to a celebration of contemporary movements such as Pop Art.
The list of featured artists reads like a who's who of the art world, including Caravaggio, Goya, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky and Rothko. Visitors can be assured the museum has something for everyone, while those with even the most fleeting of interests in the world of art will doubtless find themselves spending hour upon hour exploring the masterpieces.
