Fiesta de San Isidro in Madrid
17th January 2007
The Fiesta de San Isidro is Madrid's largest street festival and offers visitors an unrivalled look at Spanish cultural traditions.
Named after the patron saint of Madrid, Saint Isidore, the event has evolved from a religious occasion into a huge festival of music, theatre and dance performances.
The event is held in the middle of May every year and begins on May 15th, the day of Saint Isidore. Thousands of revellers line the streets to join in with the celebrations and are often clothed in traditional Spanish dress. Chulos feature neckerchiefs and waistcoats for men while chulapas are characterised by headscarves and frilly dresses for women.
Music plays an important part in the festival and is performed on street corners and in theatres. The Colegio San Evangelista holds a flamenco jazz festival and Latin bands play in Las Vistillas Park.
The capital's various districts all contribute to the festivities, with theatrical performances from Spanish folklore and street buffets being held in every neighbourhood. Traditional dishes include bitter aubergines, sweet and savoury bread and meat and vegetable soup.
The famous Spanish bullfights also begin during the festival, with large crowds gathering to watch skilled matadors in action at the Plaza de Las Ventas bullring. For visitors looking for an authentic insight into Spanish traditions, the Fiesta de San Isidro should not be missed.
