The Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht
23rd January 2007
Maastricht's Bonnefanten Museum is the city's most distinctive landmark and hosts a wide-ranging collection of paintings that encompass both renaissance and contemporary styles.
The building was designed in 1995 by renowned architect Aldo Rossi, the man who designed structures such as the Teatro del Mondo in Venice. The Bonnefanten is recognisable from its sleek silver tower that contrasts with Maastricht's more traditional Dutch surroundings.
The museum holds two departments of very different artwork. The first floor features a collection of Flemish painting from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, including work by Rubens, Brueghel the Elder and Van Dyck. Many of these works are part of a long-term loan from Amsterdam's Rijiksmuseum, which runs until 2008.
Also on the first floor are collections of Maastricht silver and early Italian paintings from the 14th century. The floor also features the Neutelings collection, which includes sculptures and objects carved from a wood, ivory and Limoges enamel.
The focus on the second floor is on contemporary art, especially the American minimalist art and Italian Arte Povera movements. Richard Merz, Sol LeWitt, Mario Merz and Luciano Fabro all have work featured.
Temporary exhibitions also focus on contemporary artists, with 2007 events featuring large installations from Fons Haagmans, Laura Owens and Mai-Thu Perret.
The third floor contains the permanent Forms of Affinity exhibit, dedicated to the work of Aldo Rossi. With a wide variety of sculpture, painting, architecture and installations to discover, the museum is a perfect destination for visitors enjoying a break in Maastricht.
