Festival in Lyon's amphitheatres

For nearly two months in the summer two Roman amphitheatres perched above the city of Lyon come alive with a whole range of cultural events.

The Nuits de Fourvière Festival held between June 14th and August 4th will see around 80,000 people head to the city for a feast of drama, music, dance and film.

The event has grown considerably during the last ten years and has previously attracted international stars such as David Bowie, Phil Collins and Joan Baez.

This year, highlights will include modern performances from the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand, world music from Gotan Project and Cesaria Evora and the Orchestre National de Lyon showcasing Brahms' Hungarian Dances 1, 7 and 8.

Cinema screenings of Some Like it Hot will also take place, in addition to Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, with music by Philip Glass.

The spectacular Éclat Final on the last night of the event will include an innovative collaboration between French hip hop and South African dance and a new take on the traditional music of Eastern European Jews.

With such a diverse programme, there is bound to be something for all tastes and ages to enjoy at the festival, and the lively atmosphere makes it a great destination for a city break.
