Beauty and history in Luxembourg

30th March 2006

Luxembourg City is tiny in comparison to many other European capitals, yet still offers a huge amount of charm, beauty and fascinating attractions.

The location of the city is spectacular, clinging to a rocky outcrop above the forested Petrusse and Alzette valleys. Adding to these views are the fantastic historical fortifications surrounding the city, categorised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a fine example of military architecture.

The winding walkway called the Chemin de la Corniche provides the best views of the city and is frequently referred to as 'Europe's most beautiful balcony'. The panoramic views of the valleys, fortifications and the city are breathtaking.

Visitors are advised to head towards the Old Town, based around the old market square. In addition to the narrow streets with unique shops, traditional cafes and excellent restaurants, the area contains Luxembourg's leading museum.

The National Museum for History and Art contains a wide collection of ancient and modern art, archaeological findings and numerous historical artefacts. The building itself is also an impressive attraction.

Luxembourg is also a fabulous destination for food and wine lovers, with more Michelin stars per square mile than any other country and plenty of wine tasting tours to be enjoyed. It is therefore a top choice for those looking for a weekend city break.
