Swiss chic in Lugano

13th May 2008

Sophisticated and luxurious, the Swiss town of Lugano epitomises the height of Swiss chic.

Lugano, which rests on the banks of the lake of the same name, is a town which attracts lovers of life's finer qualities. An area of astounding natural beauty and also home to an enviable collection of museums and art galleries, the town has gained real international prestige among more discerning visitors.

In terms of importance, Lugano is the largest town in the Ticino region and one of the most significant financial centres in Switzerland. However, its real selling point to those outside Switzerland is the marriage of fine architecture with the sublime surrounding landscape.

In the town itself, Lugano appears almost Mediterranean in quality, with squares and arcades affording ample opportunities to relax awhile and take everything in. Many of the buildings here are prime examples of the so-called Ticino School of architects, making it a must-see for architecture enthusiasts visiting Switzerland.

Leaving the town centre, Lugano becomes no less admirable, as the buildings give way to magnificent views across the Lago di Lugano. Also impressing their considerable frames on to the horizon are the Monte Brè and San Salvatore mountains, both of which make for an excellent day's walk in the mild summer sun.

Try Lugano for your next European break.
