More than just a lake at Lucerne
26th July 2006
Established in the 8th century, Lucerne became increasingly important in later centuries thanks to its location on the north-south European trading route. The city’s growing wealth resulted in the various picturesque structures which can now be found dotted across Lucerne.
One of the most stunning examples is the Chapel Bridge. Located near St Peter's Chapel, from where it takes its name, this bridge was constructed in the 14th century and has been adorned with a number of paintings illustrating scenes from local and Swiss history. However, it is not the only bridge in the city to contain paintings. The Spreuer Bridge is decorated with 67 paintings representing the "Dance of Death".
The Swiss Transport Museum is also located in Lucerne. This museum provides an interesting look at the past, present and future of transport, with over 3,000 displays. It also houses an impressive planetarium which uses high-tech projection and audio technologies to provide visitors with a fantastic show, as audiences are transported through the universe, past constellations and planets.
Another top attraction in the city is its octagonal water tower, which has become a symbol of Lucerne. Used variously as a treasury, archive and even torture chamber, the structure is now a visitor’s favourite.
The Jesuit Church, built in the 17th century, is a splendid example of Baroque architecture and houses the original vestments of famous Swiss patron, Brother Klaus. In the 15th century, Brother Klaus is believed to have solved the problems between Zurich and the other confederations, bringing peace to Switzerland.
The Musegg Wall is also worth a visit. This ancient wall used to encompass the entire city of Lucerne, but today there are only parts of it left. Established in the 14th century, the wall includes three towers which remain open to visitors to this day and the city's oldest clock is preserved in full working order in the Zyt tower. In honour of its age, it is allowed to chime on the hour one minute before the rest of the city's clocks.
