Get a taste for Lourdes
24th December 2007
Those looking for a gastronomic trip away could do worse than head to Lourdes, which is situated in the shadows of the Pyrennean peaks in France.
Anyone heading to the town may wish to indulge in one of a number of local delicacies - many of which are of the sugary variety and could tempt travellers with a sweet tooth.
According to the Office of Tourism in Lourdes, one of the local food items that should not be missed is the Gave stone, a sugar-coated sweet with a fruity flavour.
Indeed, the sweets from the Malespine pastille factory, which are made from the water from Lourdes' grotto, among other tasty ingredients, are apparently also worth a taste. Icing sugar, mint natural flavouring, lemons and aniseed all go into making these little treats.
And for those who like to digest a bit of history with their food, the Pailhasson Mazuel chocolates - production of which dates back to the 19th century -are also a local favourite.
In addition to the food on offer, Lourdes and its surrounding areas provides visitors with plenty of historical attractions, including the Mauvezin Castle, which was built on a rocky peak sometime between the 11th and 14th centuries. Views from the fortress are breathtaking.
