Delight the taste buds in Lisbon

20th March 2008

Foodies from all across Europe are expected to flock to Lisbon next month for a gastronomic celebration of local Portuguese cuisine.

From April 5th to 13th, Lisbon Fish and Flavours will highlight the quality and diversity of the area's foodstuffs, with organisers suggesting taste buds are in for a thrill.

This will be the first food festival under this banner and organisers hope that it will become an annual event that will draw many repeat visits to the city.

The inaugural event will take place at the Terreiro do Paco - Patio da Gale. Chefs - among them the likes of Miguel Castro e Silva and Henrique Sa Pessoa - and other food experts will display their skills in the auditorium, while other related activities will also tickle the taste buds and educate and inspire wannabe cooks throughout the festival.

Eight restaurants will be featured in the cloister, where people can enjoy meals or taste samples of local cuisine.

And the culinary delights do not stop at the festival, as Lisbon offers visitors an exceptional foodie experience at any time of the year.

Last year, the Observer reported on the Lisbon "cult" of Pasteis de Nata - custard tarts created from a recipe that is nearly two centuries old.

It mentioned the Antiga Confeitaria de Belem near Lisbon's waterfront which bakes 16,000 of the tarts a day and declared they are "worth a trip to Portugal in themselves".

Treat your senses in Lisbon.
