Linz opens year of culture
7th November 2008
Those heading to Linz this winter can sample the opening ceremony for its year as the Capital of Culture.
Set to happen between December 31st and January 2nd, the event will see the city erupt in fireworks and celebrations in a three-day party.
Visitors are recommended to watch the goings-on on the banks of the river Danube, as this will afford the best view of the fireworks.
Clubs, bars and restaurants are all staying open late to honour the celebrations, which will begin two hours before midnight and continue until the last man is standing.
At the stroke of the new year the Rocket Symphony will strike up their music for all to enjoy, followed by a Party in the Whole City at 01:00 local time.
Through the next two days there will be folk presentations, inaugurations and previews of what the city's year as the culture capital will offer.
January 2nd will see the premiere of the Book of Disquiet, which is a musical drama created by composer and film director Nichel van der Aa.
People staying out of the centre of Linz will not miss out on the events, as after January 2nd the festivities will spread out to the suburbs and surrounding areas.
Those who want to explore the culture of the city further can visit attractions like the Ars Electronica Centre and the Lentos Museum of Modern Art.
Sample the culture while on a Linz break.
