A fiery welcome to Liege
26th May 2006
Known as the fiery city, Liege is one of the oldest industrial centres in Europe.
However, the city has shown its ability to move with the times over the years and as the industry has moved away, so Liege has managed to bloom into a beautiful tourist spot beloved by many visitors.
Busier and more busting than Bruges, this city has an atmosphere similar to Belgium's capital, Brussels, with a lively vibe and plenty for travellers to do.
Shopping has become a big pull in Liege, thanks in no small part to the long traffic-free streets of the old town, where local and international outlets have capitalised on the foot traffic to offer a vast array of goods.
In the centre, St Lambert Square provides a glimpse of modern Liege, with cafes and restaurants always busy with both locals and tourists. The square is a focal point for the city and also contains the impressive Palace of Justice, formerly the palace of the Prince-Bishops of Liege.
Not far from St Lambert Square is the symbol of the city, the Perron at the Place du Marché, which represents the freedoms of the city and the Province of Liege.
Liege is also renowned for its beautiful Meuse River, which flows around the city and brings character to the area. A number of striking bridges have been constructed across it, including the Passerelle bridge, and a trip along the river is a good way to get a different view of the city.
