Long weekend in Leuven

8th May 2006

Leuven is an extremely vibrant city, with its large student population ensuring a lively atmosphere and there are plenty of attractions to keep people with a variety of tastes busy.

The city is only 20 km east of Brussels and includes the oldest university in Belgium, dating back to the 15th century.

Architecture fans will find much to enjoy in Leuven, with the Church of St Peter one of the highlights. This fantastic gothic building houses Dirk Bouts' The Last Supper painting.

Even more spectacular is the imposing Stadhuis or Town Hall, another fantastic example of gothic architecture with statues around the outside and a collection of artwork inside.

Art lovers should head to the Museum Vander Kelen-Mertens with its diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, glass, silver and furniture.

A fantastic place for a relaxing walk is the Groot Begijnhof, a beautiful convent which is free of traffic and an ideal place for a quiet stroll.

The Belgian city has a vibrant nightlife and excellent restaurants and bars. Visitors are urged to sample one of the many cafes and restaurants of the Oude Markt for a traditional Belgian waffle or beer.

Leuven has a friendly, welcoming feel and with so many fabulous attractions, makes a great choice for a short city break.
