Art in Leipzig
9th February 2007
Leipzig's historical status as the centre for a number of publishing houses meant that it was once known as the book city, but the growing number of artistic attractions means it could just as easily now be called the art city.
Among the many museums in the city is the Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1837 and now holding over 2,700 paintings from the Middle Ages to the present day. Found nearby is the Gallery of Contemporary Arts, which displays paintings and sculptures produced after 1945.
More unusual attractions include the Workshops and Museum of Printing Art, which illustrates the history of the printing press and the innovative ways in which it has been used since the Renaissance.
The New Leipzig School provides a more contemporary artistic movement. Arising from a group of artists who studied at the city's Academy of Visual Arts, members such as Neo Rauch are now gaining international attention from newspapers such as the New York Times.
The Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei now holds an annual art weekend in which 100 artists from the New Leipzig School display their works in the former cotton mill. Events are held throughout the year within the building, with the Pierogi international gallery the latest to open a branch within the Spinnerei. Leipzig's thriving art scene makes it a key destination for any culturally-minded visitors to Germany.
