Interlaken: A tale of two lakes

26th October 2007

The Swiss resort of Aarmuhle took on the name Interlaken only recently in its history, but the moniker says everything about the location and the beauty of the region.

Adapted from 'inter lakus' - the Latin for 'between the lakes' - the name Interlaken reflects the positioning of Interlaken between the lakes of Thun and Brienz.

Visits to these lakes offer breathtaking views of Interlaken's natural splendour and also afford the opportunity to take part in a range of watersports.

The same can be said of the rugged alpine peaks that stands tall on the horizon. Interlaken sits at the foot of the vast Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch mountains, which are not only a once-in-a-lifetime sights in themselves, but are also perfect for hiking, skiing and skydiving.

Interlaken is the perfect destination for those enchanted by the immeasurable power of nature. Some of the best places to take in the magnitude of the region's peaks include Schynige Platte, which can be reached via a 100-year-old steam engine line, and the Jungfraujoch, which boasts the highest railway station in Europe.

Not all of the majesty of Interlaken is independent of human influence. Indeed, the former Augustine monastery and castle, which has stood since 1100, rivals the mountains in terms of resilience.
