Innsbruck - internationally renowned
14th November 2007
The city of Innsbruck is located in area that has been of key importance to European empires for centuries, but now the capital of the Austrian state of Tyrol has become internationally renowned as a great place to visit.
Innsbruck translates from German as the 'the bridge over the River Inn' and the Romans established settlements in the area more than 1,500 years ago, but more recently the region has become a major draw for winter sports enthusiasts.
Having hosted the Winter Olympic Games on two separate occasions, it is little wonder that Innsbruck is now known as a great place to ski and, according to About Austria.org, the city is widely considered to be Europe's unofficial capital of snowboarding.
But even for those who are not interested in hitting Tyrol's Alpine slopes, there is plenty to enjoy in Innsbruck given its fascinating history, which includes periods of resistance against various invaders, evidenced in some stunning statues and architecture.
Furthermore, Innsbruck boasts a number of high-quality hotels and a thriving nightlife, as well as a selection of top restaurants and eateries.
Visit Innsbruck for a variety of reasons.
