Herrenhausen Gardens in Hannover

11th January 2007

Hannover's Herrenhausen Gardens were constructed in 1666 and still fascinate visitors over 340 years later. Commissioned by the Kings and Electors of the city, the grounds stretch for over 135 hectares and contain a number of attractions.

The gardens are divided into four sections and hold a museum, a castle and what was once a royal palace.

The Great Garden was designed by famous Frenchman Martin Charbonnier and is the largest baroque garden in Germany. The section hosts numerous festivals and events including operas and the annual Festival of Small Arts, which displays regional artwork.

The Berggarten was once a simple vegetable garden but has now expanded to include over 12,000 varieties of plants. The Rainforest House holds more exotic variants thanks to a carefully monitored tropical climate.

The Georgengarten and Welfengarten are both designed in an English style, with the latter now belonging to the University of Hanover, which also uses the Welfenschloss castle found in the garden.

Within the Georgengarten lies Wallmoden Palace, a former royal residence that now houses the Wilhelm-Busch Museum. The museum exhibits work by satirical artist Wilhelm Busch along with displays by modern cartoonists.

With an annual summer fireworks display, ornamental flower beds and a 230 foot fountain also found within the Great Garden, a visit to the extensive Herrenhausen grounds is a must for anyone enjoying a break in Hannover.
