Baroque festival at Herrenhausen in Hannover
9th April 2008
One of the most beautiful settings in Europe plays host to Hannover's Baroque festival, taking place between May 18th and July 6th.
The Herrenhausen Gardens, which have stood for more than three centuries, welcome visitors through the summer months to enjoy a programme of cultural events.
Built as a royal residence, Herrenhausen's grounds include a museum, castle and a number of different gardens - the most impressive of which is the Great Garden.
Designed by Martin Charbonnier, this space is the largest in the baroque style in Germany. During the Baroque festival, the hedges and fountains of this delightful spot will be illuminated at night.
Meanwhile, the 17th century gallery building will take on its own hues, with chandeliers lighting up its frescoes. It is in this building that much of the events of the festival are to take place.
A number of musical and theatrical performances are planned for this year's bill. For example, Agostini Steffani's opera Orlando Generoso can be heard, while the ascendant recorder soloist Dorothee Oberlinger will also be playing.
While visiting Herrenhausen, take the opportunity to visit the English-styled Georgengarten and Welfengarten and the exotic plant life within the Rainforest House.
