Enjoy the many sights of Hamburg
1st March 2006
Hamburg is Germany's second largest city and biggest port, yet also remains the greenest city in the country, which perhaps goes some way to explain the relaxed atmosphere enjoyed by visitors.
The harbour is one of the most popular sights of Hamburg and covering over 12 per cent of the city it is hard to miss. By climbing the steps about St Pauli Landundgsbrucken visitors can witness the old parts and the bustling modern port sitting hand in hand.
Hamburg contains some magnificent architecture, with the cathedrals of St Jacobi and St Michael impressive sights and the second offers great views of the city.
For something slightly different, visitors can enjoy the many beer halls across Hamburg, while the famous fish market (selling more than just fish!) is popular with tourists and locals alike due to the lively and friendly atmosphere.
The many parks such as Alster Lake provide a relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of the city and there is also a botanic garden.
Hamburg has no less that four train stations, which allows easy travel between German cities and beyond.
