Grindelwald and its surrounding peaks

30th October 2007

Grindelwald's position at the foot of three imposing mountains means it is blessed not only with some of the most outstanding views in Europe, but also with the perfect setting for nature trails and winter sports.

The municipality is part of the Interlaken district and as such is a neighbour of various resorts. However, Interlaken is one of the oldest skiing destinations in Europe and also one of the most cosmopolitan.

Grindelwald is surrounded by the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, as well as vast expanses of greenery. The mountains offer slopes to meet every level of skiing ability, making it an ideal place to visit in groups with varied experience. Also, the village of Grindelwald comes to life by winter, with a natural skating rink hosting a festival of ice sculptures.

By summer, the mountains remain an attraction, with hikers heading out on alpine trails and mountaineers attempting to scale the peaks. Grindelwald is also a preferred destination for those seeking rest and recuperation. Aside from its picturesque walks and clean mountain air, there is a whirlpool and outdoor pool at Hellbach and a sauna complex at the sports centre.

One way to explore the natural beauty of Grindelwald is to head out on the pilgrimage paths towards St Petronell's chapel. Although the chapel is no longer there, many of the landmarks along the way still survive.

Take an alpine break in Grindelwald.
