Great times to be had in Grenoble

25th May 2006

Grenoble is a vibrant city with a rich historical heritage and plenty of attractions to keep visitors busy during a city break.

The city has a welcoming atmosphere and is surrounded by mountains, dramatic gorges and beautiful valleys, and the fantastic architecture dating back to the third century makes Grenoble a wonderful place to stroll around.

For breathtaking views of the city and its gorgeous surroundings, a trip to the ancient fortifications of the Bastille is highly recommended. Visitors can enjoy discovery trails around the fortifications, viewing platforms, footpaths and catering outlets.

An excellent collection of both ancient and contemporary art is housed at the Musée de Grenoble, with works by artists such as Matisse, Rubens and Canaletto.

Another highlight of the city is the Musée Dauphinois, which is housed in a beautiful 17th century building and contains a fabulous collection of artefacts detailing the archaeology, history and decorative arts of the region.

For a fascinating insight into the emergence of Christianity in the region, visitors should head to the Eglise Musée St Laurent. A funerary complex dating back to the fourth century was discovered at the church, with the oratory offering a rare example of French art from the early Middle Ages.

With ski slopes a short distance away and so much to see and do, Grenoble is an excellent choice of destination for a weekend break.
