Old meets new in Graz

27th September 2007

Graz has for centuries been a seat of learning and culture. With six universities, it has been a home and inspiration to legions of inquiring minds through the years, and its age-old beauty sits comfortably with its progressive modern architecture.

Situated in the south-east of Austria, the warm-weathered city was once the home to a line of the Habsburg family. Their castle still stands on the Schlossberg, a small tree-coated mountain which stands undisturbed in the centre of Graz.

The mingling of different architectural styles has earned the city's old town a place on the Unesco world heritage list. Many of the most impressive buildings in Graz can be found here, from the Gothic cathedral to the Renaissance-era Landhaus, where the parliament of Styria meets.

As impressive as its stock of old architecture may be, Graz also scores highly for its modern outlook. Named the European capital of culture in 2003, the city features some astounding modern buildings, such as the Kunsthaus modern art gallery on the bank of the river Mur and the Helmut-List-Hall venue. The manmade Murinsel island is also a must-see.

A stroll around Graz is as good a way as any to take in its historical splendour. The Sporgasse and the Hauptpatz are bustling yet picturesque areas to explore, while early risers should head to Kaier-Josef-Platz for the wonderful Farmers' Market.

Why not take a city break in Graz.
