Go for Ghent

Those planning a holiday in Belgium might instinctively think of Bruges and Brussels. However, one of the country's best kept secrets is medieval Ghent.

With its scenic canals and river, the historic town is the perfect place to go for a relaxing break.

History enthusiasts will not be short of sights to explore such as the city's gothic cathedral which features the world-renowned altarpiece by Hubert and Jan van Eyck known as The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.

Other great attractions in Ghent include the Fine Arts Museum, the Museum of Folklore, the Museum for Contemporary Art and the Ghent Design Museum.

Every Friday, a street market is held in the city centre where visitors can shop for a bargain and try some local produce.

When it comes to eating out, there are some great restaurants and bars around Ghent such as the Belga Queen, The House of Elliot and the Brasserie Pakhuis.

Archaeologists believe that there were human settlers in Ghent during prehistoric times. Today, the city is home to around 250,000 inhabitants and attracts tourists keen to enjoy and explore what this fascinating place has to offer.
