Grand times in Geneva
4th April 2006
Geneva is a fantastic choice for a weekend break, with dramatic landscapes, excellent museums, top restaurants and an adventurous spirit.
On its peaceful setting on Lake Geneva's Banks, the Swiss city is compact and easily explored on foot. Viewing the city by boat is also highly recommended.
One of the top attractions of Geneva is the Jet d'Eau, the world's tallest fountain, which at any one time can launch seven tonnes of water into the air and over surprised spectators.
Another highlight is L'Horloge Fleurie, a spectacular and vibrantly colourful clock made from 6,500 plants set in the Jardin Anglais.
Museum lovers should head to the Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporain which is housed in an old factory and showcases pieces by established and rising artists. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum also offers a fascinating history of the Red Cross and presents a guide to the atrocities of recent human history.
Those seeking adventure are advised to head up the Saleve mountain, either by cable car, foot or car. The summit provides breathtaking views of Geneva, while mountain-biking, hand-gliding or rock-climbing are all available.
With easy access to ski runs, vineyards, spas and historic towns, Geneva is a great destination for those wishing for a city break.
