Freiburg: Germany's sun-drenched eco-city
26th June 2008
Straddling the Dreisam river, the German city of Freiberg lies on the western edge of the Black Forest and is said to be the warmest city in the country.
The city was founded as a free market town in the 12th century by Duke Konrad of Zahringen.
Among Freiburg's dominant architectural features is the old Minster, construction of which began under the rule of Bertold V, the last king of Zahringen.
Modern day Freiberg is a haven for tourists who come to enjoy its many attractions and sunny climate.
Other attraction include the regular farmers market which take place in the Münsterplatz, the old city hall - which was completed in 1559 and the Old Synagogue Square.
A distinctive feature of the city is the unorthodox system of gutters that run throughout its centre. Once used to fight fires and feed farm animals, the gutters continue to flow with water diverted from the River Dreisam.
Freiberg has also attracted attention for its environmentalism. Known as an 'eco-city', Freiberg has attracted many solar power firms and was also the first major German city to elect a Green Party mayor.
