Goethe Haus in Frankfurt

Visitors to Frankfurt can explore the life and passions of its most famous resident in the Goethe House and Museum, found in the city's old town.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in the residence in 1749, and went on to become one of the most acclaimed writers in the history of literature. The house and Goethe Museum present a look at the author's life and his extensive collections of artwork.

It was in the house that Goethe wrote some of his most famous works, including The Sorrows of Young Werther and Faust. The puppet theatre room on the top floor provides a fascinating insight into how the young artist began to use his imaginative powers.

Goethe's father was a senior councillor, and held a number of important cultural pieces. The second floor features a library which contains over 2,000 books on every subject, as well as an extensive picture gallery. Works by artists such as Juncker, Trautmann and Seekatz are all on display in the house.

The importance of fine art in Goethe's life is also emphasised by the Goethe Museum, found next door. The Museum examines German paintings ranging from pieces commissioned by the royal court to romantic works by 19th century artist Caspar David Friedrich.

The literary connection is further extended via the works of Henry Fuseli, the British artist who took inspiration from Shakespeare's plays. With so much culture to see in such a unique historical setting, Goethe's house should not be missed by visitors enjoying a relaxing break in Frankfurt.
