Palazzo Pitti in Florence

7th November 2006

Florence has long been known as one of the centres of the Italian Renaissance, and the Palazzo Pitti shows why. Otherwise known as the Pitti Palace, the main building block alone takes up 32,000 square metres of ground, and features numerous museums and attractions.

With famous past residents including the Renaissance Medici family, Napoleon Bonaparte, and several members of the Italian royal family, the palace is truly fit for a king – or at least for high-ranking nobility, and the largest museum complex in the city boasts numerous testaments to this fact.

The Palatine Gallery is arguably the most famous display in the palace, featuring artwork from Raphael, Titian and Rubens among others. The collection of over 500 paintings is complemented by the 30 rooms of modern art which, as Italian terminology dictates, feature work from the period leading up to World War II.

The Silver and Porcelain Museums feature items donated to Florentine rulers by other European sovereigns, as well as gemstones and gold purchased by previous owners. A series of 17th century frescos mean that even the walls are works of art in their own right.

The trappings of the upper classes are also to be found within the museum, with a Costume Gallery and Carriages Museum presenting a visual history of Italian fashions and transportation throughout the ages.

Even then, visitors could find themselves forgetting about the interior attractions as they take a tour of more than 320,000 square metres of botanical gardens, which feature sculptures, fountains and stunning flower displays. With such delights to be found on both the inside and the outside of the palace, it's no wonder that the Palazzo Pitti receives more than five million visitors a year.
