Plenty of sights in Dijon

17th July 2006

The historical capital of the province of Burgundy, Dijon has much to offer visitors to the city.

The city is renowned for its beautiful churches and visitors can spend hours wandering from one to the other, taking in the splendid architecture.

One of the most impressive structures in Dijon is the cathedral of Saint-Bénigne, an excellent example of Lombard architecture including a beautiful three-story rotunda.

Dijon is of course synonymous with mustard and it is therefore no surprise that the city includes a museum dedicated to the fiery condiment. The city has been linked with mustard since the 14th century and the museum provides examples of mustard for visitors to taste, as well as showing how it is created.

Another attraction of the city is the large number of half-timbered houses. Built between the 12th and 15th centuries, the properties are scattered throughout the centre of Dijon and are beautiful reminders of the city's historical importance. Over half the buildings in the city centre are more than 200 years old, making it one of the best-preserved cities in France.

The Ducal Palace in Dijon is one of only a few remaining examples of the Capetian period of the city. However, it is a powerful reminder of the influence that Dijon used to wield and provides visitors with a perfect way to spend a day of a short break to the city, wandering round the museums contained within it.
