Sporting splendour in Davos

25th July 2006

The busy town of Davos is perhaps best known among travellers for its skiing opportunities. Set in the Landwasser River Valley, between two large mountain ranges, the town is a magnet for skiing fans.

Davos offers slopes suitable for all levels, from beginners right up to the most experienced of skiers. Access to the various slopes is easy, with a number of lifts and cable cars connecting them.

The après ski scene includes excellent restaurants and a busy and exciting nightlife. There are many bars and clubs in the centre of town which often attract a large crowd, with a mix of both locals and visitors.

The city is also home to some culturally important buildings. The best of these is probably the Kirchner Museum in the town's centre. This museum hosts the world's largest collection of artwork by the German Expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and is well worth a visit.

Apart from the skiing and après ski activities on offer in Davos, many people come to the town on a short break to get away from the hectic city life. Although it has a busy feel to it, Davos is more relaxed than most large towns and its air quality is second to none – in the 19th century it was recommended to patients with lung disease as a place to visit while convalescing and the pure Alpine air is still refreshing to this day.
